Hawaiian Party Supplies
A Hawaiian birthday party is always a fun and festive event, bringing friends together in the Hawaiian fashion. They are harmonious and easy, the decorations are simple enough, and everyone always seems to have a good time at them. You can serve such an array of food and drinks that nearly everyone in attendance is certain to enjoy everything offered. When your child said she wanted a Hawaiian birthday party, your first thought was probably, “Where can we get cute Hawaiian party supplies?” There are a million different Hawaiian party supplies you can find, but don’t get yourself overwhelmed. In reality, all it takes is a few to get the party going.
1) Leis. The most important items you need at your party are leis. Leis are a definite must-have at any Hawaiian party. Without leis, your party will run the risk of being a flop. Don’t panic! There are a plethora of places to find them. You have options when choosing leis: the cheap plastic kind, the softer, more expensive kind, or real leis. Unless you live where natural leis are easily accessible, try going for the more practical version as most people will get the point. The plastic kind of lei is super cheap and you can usually buy them in bulk.
2) Grass skirts. Grass skirts are fun to wear and play in and will be a hit at your child’s Hawaiian birthday party. You can usually find these in kits with the “coconut” bra, although these are usually made out of paper or plastic as well as the skirt. Have them readily available for your guests to put on for the party; that way nobody has to purchase a set themselves and nobody feels left out.
3) Flower hair clips. These easy accessories are relatively cheap as well and usually come in packs. Set these in a basket near the entrance to the party so your guests can put them in their hair. Flower hair clips will make anyone feel like they are actually in Hawaii, even if they are really just in your back yard.
4) Hawaiian music. No Hawaiian party would be complete without some luau music. Download some luau music or purchase a CD with that music on it and let it play throughout the party. It will really put your guests in the right mood. Try to find some ukulele tunes, as this usually sets the mood the best for these types of parties.
5) Pig roast. These roasts are not for everyone, but when done properly, can have a great effect on a party. Your guests will love the “authenticity” of the party as well as the delicious food. Pig roasts can be dangerous if not done properly, so make sure you or someone you know understands how they are done.
6) Tiki cups. Tiki cups can be found fairly inexpensive at online stores or at party warehouses near you. They are a great addition to any Hawaiian party and the guests can take them home afterward, too!
7) For decorations, you can use Tiki supplies such as straw coverings for the table, tiki torches, thatch umbrellas and more. Palm trees, whether real or fake, are a great decorative piece and can be placed in corners by the food tables or elsewhere.
8) In the invitations, you can ask your guests to come “dressed for the occasion,” which in this case means dressed for a luau, or the beach. Hawaiian shirts, shorts, skirts, tank tops, sandals, flip flops, etc. Letting your guests know just what they are getting into will help them prepare for the party and let them pick something to wear before hand.
9) Bonfire business. Having a bonfire at your Hawaiian party is a great way to keep your guests warm and cozy and keep the night roaring with the luau atmosphere.
10) Luau tableware, including tablecloths, napkins, plates, forks, knives, spoons, and cups should be used at the Hawaiian birthday party. You can get a luau banner to hang above the food table to add a little extra flair to the event.
11) Lights, lights, lights. If your party will be heading into night time hours, overlapping the time when it gets dark, then you can decorate the party area with Christmas lights. Using Christmas lights to light the area you will be using for the party will greatly enhance the atmosphere of the party, as well as provide a bright source of light without the harshness of regular lamps or porch lights. Plus, you can twist these lights around poles or fences or trees to really capture the area in a soft glow.
12) Do the limbo. The limbo is a classic Hawaiian party game that only uses two instruments: a long and straight stick, and a musical device, which will most likely be a boom box of sorts. Children will love playing the limbo game because they get multiple chances to win, plus it’s fun to watch!
13) Food. If a pig roast is not for you, or you simply would like to serve more food, then here are some options for you: mini weenies in a barbeque sauce, meatballs, pigs in a blanket, chips and dip, chips and salsa, pineapple pizza, fruit cocktails, mixed fruit displays including melons, grapes, and pineapple, and crackers with cheese. Stick to lighter foods and if you can, try to find tropical flavored foods. You may even look into ordering a Hawaiian barbeque catering service, depending on the number of people you need to feed as well as your budget.
With just 13 tips, your party planning to-do list went from unmanageable to managed. Using your creativity to think of cute things to decorate with or serve as food, or have as activities, as well as basing your decorations and food preferences off of your own tastes, will help you create the perfect party for your child and your guests. All you need is a few great Hawaiian party supplies and your party will be on fire!
