If it is basketball season—or even if it’s not—your child is probably bouncing a ball around nearly every second of every day, shooting air baskets, and boxing out invisible players. Don’t worry; he is not the only one. Children everywhere love basketball. They love playing it, watching it, talking about it, anything! Basketball is a way of life for some young people, and a basketball party seems an obvious choice for a birthday party. In fact, they have probably already started planning, finding all sorts of basketball party supplies!

So, as you begin planning your child’s basketball party, assess the supplies you are going to need, both the ones you will need to buy as well as the supplies you already have. Consider what activities the children will want to partake in, what food will be served, what decorations you will need. Sometimes, many of the basketball party supplies you think you need, you already own or are cheaper than you would expect.

Make Your Own Invites
Buying invitations can be costly and wasteful, especially if you are required to purchase a set amount but only have a certain number of guests being invited. Although it may seem like the easiest and most convenient way to go about getting invitations, look at your other options before setting your order.

Making your own invitations can be both fun and cheap. All you really need is a computer, printer, and envelopes. You can either use a card designing program or find a picture of your child’s favorite basketball star and print it out for each invitation. You can write all the information by hand, or use your computer software to type it out on the invitations. Have your child decorate the envelopes himself with stickers and drawings, although you will need to supervise.

Plan the Activities
If you already have a basketball hoop either in your yard or a play one in your home, then you can use that to play a game of basketball! Utilize your resources for all they are worth, i.e. plan the bulk of the party around a basketball tournament. Have the children split up into two teams and play half-court games.

If the basketball game gets over quickly, choose another tournament competition. Set up a free-throw competition or “blind throw” competition, in which the payer is blindfolded, turned around a few times, and then positioned to shoot the ball into the hoop.

A mini basketball training camp can be loads of fun when done correctly. Training camp activities might include an obstacle course, easy basketball drills, or dribbling lessons. Remember that if players are playing against each other and there is a winner, try to award everyone involved. Giving prizes to everyone will keep the guests entertained and happy to be there. Prizes and awards can be any number of things, including candy, basketball cups, little trophies, etc. A great gift for the birthday child is to have each of the guests sign a basketball before the end of the party.

Decorations
Time for decorating! Don’t think you have to spend hundreds on decorations to make the party come off great. Decorations are simply items you use to spruce up your party, to emphasize the theme of your party, or to make the space more inviting to guests, letting everyone enjoy the company and general festivities. Your decorations can be posters of basketball players, pictures of your child’s favorite team, or even things you make.

For instance, basketballs can easily be made by cutting large circles out of orange construction paper and using permanent marker to create the seams. Hang these on the walls, from the table, or from crepe paper strung from the ceiling.

Hang team caps around the room, maybe buying some as welcome gifts for the guests and placing one at each seat for the kids to find as they come in. If your child has a favorite team, make sure there are decorations supporting it.

Your centerpiece can be a collection of helium latex and Mylar balloons, or you can tie a couple balloons to each guest’s chair at the table. If you are creative and open-minded, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a fun and decorative party.

Food
When choosing food for the party, think of bulk items that can easily feet a large number of people. Pizza is a great choice and it is a staple basketball stadium food. Along with it, you can serve chips or pretzels, or even peanuts.

Hot dogs are also an option and are easy to make. Also think about sub sandwiches, chips and dip, and nachos. You can place bowls of pretzels around the party area for people to munch on as well as offer “slam dunk punch,” which can be any sort of punch or lemonade.

Cake
Your cake options are endless for a basketball theme party. You could design it like a basketball, a full basketball court, a team’s jersey, a hoop and a ball, or even bake cupcakes with little basketball tops for all the guests. If you are looking to be real creative, you can bake little individual cakes in the shape of mini basketballs.

Favors
Your favors can include any variety of basketball-related memorabilia. Mini basketballs are fun and useful while basketball magazines offer entertainment and perhaps are something that not every child has had the pleasure of enjoying.

Packaging homemade cupcakes decorated like basketballs are fun, as well as stickers, trading cards, and personalized t-shirts you can have each child design in the style of a jersey (with their name on the back) while at the party. Decorate plain cups with basketball stickers and write basketball phrases or player’s numbers on them and fill them with candy. You have a variety of cheap options to choose from.

When it comes to basketball party supplies, you do not need to spend every last dime you have on making them spectacular. Simply acknowledge what you already have and be free with your creativity. Have fun planning the party and it will surely be a success.
