Baby shower parties are a tradition begun in America, but which are now firmly settled in most European countries. A baby shower party is an opportunity for friends of the mother to get together, shower mom with presents, and to jointly celebrate the imminent arrival of the newest member of the group. Baby showers can be very stressful to organise: not every woman has had her own baby shower, and is likely to worry about what kind of baby shower party supplies she will need, where the event will take place, and what kind of presents should be allowed. If it is intended to be a surprise baby shower party, this can be even more worrying for the organiser: how to get everyone in the same place on time, and convince mom to turn up too?

The first thing that needs to be considered in any baby shower is the personality of the mother. Does she like wacky presents and table decorations, or would she be more comfortable with a host of practical things, such as dummies and diapers? If she is a more down-to-earth mom, she might not like a useless stork in the middle of the table – but she might welcome a pair of mini baby rattles, or something practical in that line. Of course if she enjoys a good giggle then the world is your oyster – pick as many crazy baby shower party supplies as the budget will allow. Any list of baby shower party supplies needs to include a lot of baby shower decorations: from balloons shaped like babies to fancies and centrepieces (such as storks), enormous banners, or fairly small table decorations. It’s also important not to forget the little things, such as invites, cake candles, and party sashes.

Invitations are obviously the most important baby shower party supply to buy: if there’s no invites, there’s no guests! Buying invites is very much a matter of personal taste – does the hostess want something a bit amusing, with a cartoon maybe, or a teddy bear on the front; or would she like something more sophisticated, such as an invite with a photograph of a pregnant mother on the front, or a simple coloured card with “you’re invited” on it? The hostess can buy a range of fashionable and appealing invites online, no matter what kind she desires. An additional afterthought is the ‘thank you’ cards, to be given to all the guests that attended and helped to make the baby shower a success.

These can also be sent with announcement cards, letting the guests know when the baby arrived, what sex it was (if they didn’t know), and the name/weight/any other details. These are good ways of helping to keep friends in the loop, even after the birth of a baby. Balloons are an all-round favourite among those buying baby shower party supplies; they come in so many different varieties that it’s virtually impossible to find a balloon that won’t go with the party being hosted. From modest little balloons with “Baby shower” printed across them to balloons in the shape of a baby, a baby carriage, or even a baby vest. If the party is to be stork themed, there are plenty of stork shaped foil balloons, or less complicated balloons with a picture of a stork on. And whatever happens, don’t forget the balloon string, or a snazzy little balloon weight that can also serve as a photo holder. Cake is also a big thing to consider on any list of party supplies: hosts of the shower can either buy in a specially-made baby shower cake, or they can purchase a plain sponge and decorate with a host of icing plaques and candles, including ones with teddy bears on – they look very cute.

The mother can also have a range of food picks in the cake – it might be a good idea to find out what she is expecting (boy or girl), as some picks carry messages saying “It’s a boy” or “it’s a girl”, and it would be embarrassing for the host to pick wrongly. Another important issue is the problem of what to buy the mother for her present: a successful host might take the precaution of providing a list of suitable present with the invitations, although this does carry the risk that presents will be duplicated. The presents will depend upon the mother; if she is a practical sort, then maybe tiered diaper cakes will be appreciated, or a “Mommy’s feeding Duty belt” with a combination of bottles, teething rattles, and other early infancy essentials; a more upbeat mother might like a “Having a baby fund” money tin – it might come in useful as a swear box during late nights.

There are a range of party accessory sets which contained themed partyware, either with a baby on or a motif of the expectant mother. Finding out the sex of the baby might also be a good idea if the hostess intends to buy a ready-made pack complete with all the necessary baby shower party supplies. These can be neutral, but more often they are coloured for either a boy or a girl; however there are many interesting and appealing designs to choose from, and many hostesses with a tight budget might consider buying a pack rather than splashing out on individual items. Baby shower party supplies packs can be purchased online.

As well as the technical aspects of baby shower party supplies, it is important not to forget baby shower party games, such as the “Water Broke Game”, or the “how big is mom’s tum” and any outside entertainment you wish to provide – other factors to remember are: enough time for all the presents to be handed out; time for mom to be pampered and spoiled; any food to be handed around, eaten, and the cutlery and crockery cleared away. To be a successful holder of a baby shower, getting the right baby shower party supplies is only half the battle: organising the event and making sure that it goes with a bang is an entire challenge on its own. Good luck!
